School Visits
Beyond the SEA Teacher Program, we experienced visiting PAUD and elementary schools in the nearby area of Solo. It was not just a simple visit to primary schools, but rather a memorable learning of Indonesia’s culture through batik making, salim, and exchanging language.
The warm welcome in MIM Digday Bolon, SD Muhammadiyah plus Malangjiwan, SD Muhammadiyah PK Baturan Colomadu, MIM Aka Mojogedang, and MIM Gedongan schools made us feel connected and appreciated in their culture. One of the lessons I learned during the school visits is that despite our cultural differences, Indonesia and the Philippines shared a common thing: the heart of being hospitable to others.

Familiarity with the Unknown
Mari makan and let the taste of Indonesia's cuisine satisfy your cravings!
I am not a big fan of spicy foods, but part of living in a different culture is embracing their cooking styles, and I guess it was not bad. Having Indonesian meals is one of the highlights of this experience, it is where you get to experience tasting different spices from your local country. Being used to it makes me feel like a local too. It's a feeling that I can eat tumis tahu kecap for the entire week even tho I don’t usually eat tofu, but it should have a free es teh on the side. Aside from that, I learn to love the taste of martabak manis, nasi goreng, cimol, and klepon –some of the famous foods in Indonesia that will not disappoint you.

They say that living far from home will make you miss home –your family and friends you left in your home country. But having SEA-sters and SEA-blings by heart in this program filled the spaces; they made me feel alive when I felt breathless, and their existence is not what I expected I would call my people. The moments we shared are what I found home in Indonesia –it is when I feel that I am not far from home.
As we keep in touch after this program, some of you have said that late-night talks and midnight walks around UMS Kampus 4, strolls around Solo, and brunches at Warteg are not the same, and undeniably, they will never be the same as before. But if I could relive those moments, I would relive them a hundred times.
